Growing Media – Expanded Clay

You have a lot of options for a growing media to use with your marijuana plants in your hydroponic garden. Diahydro and Rockwool are a few others that are known but expanded clay is a choice that a lot of people like as well.

Expanded Clay

This type of growing media is basically clay pellets that are baked at 1200 degrees Celsius which causes expansion of the clay. The result is a bigger clay pellet which is very light-weighted. The shapes of the pellets can vary but they are usually pretty round. Expanded clay can be both cleaned and put through sterilization so there are a lot of benefits to using it. if you wash the expanded clay in various things like chlorine bleach or white vinegar you could clean the clay and be able to use it again. Some people believe the roots can get into the clay though and shouldn’t be reused but there is no evidence to support either opinion.

Expanded clay works great with marijuana plants if the nutrients are situated in a water solution that is controlled. Expanded clay also contains no nutrients so the pH level is not affected from using expanded clay and that makes monitoring the pH level easier for your marijuana plants.
